When most people think of thrift stores they think of grandma pants and ratty clothes from the 80’s. Little do they know how many great things there are hiding in the tight clothes racks. When people ask me where I got a shirt or a pair of pants fro, almost everytime I answer “The thrift store” and they always ask me how I find the clothes I do. So here I have compiled majority of my tips into Five main pieces of advice. May you read these tips and find all your thrifting problems solved !!
Here are my top 5 tips for Thrifting:
Don’t go in with any expectations.
The first, and arguably the most important piece of advice I can give you is to not walk in expecting to find the newest Gucci Belt or last season’s Chanel Bag. Thrift stores are not like any other store; they’re unique. They’re full of odds and ends and everything in between. Everytime you go, it’s inevitable there will be new things, so it’s important not to go in expecting to find the latest up to date fashion pieces.
Keep an Open Mind.
This advice does relate to the first tip, but is definitely important enough to repeat. There is going to be some strange but weirdly intriguing pieces of clothing that you probably wouldn’t ever wear, but for some reason you secretly love. Go for it! Take a risk and rock it! Who knows you may just end up loving the yellow windbreaker that probably belonged to someone’s grandpa.
Visit Often
Thrift stores are constantly getting new donations daily, so if you want the best chance of finding something that you love, it’s important to check the racks very often. Whether you have five minutes to kill or an hour, drive down to a Goodwill and scan the racks for a bit.
Look Everywhere!!
Do not limit yourself to one section of the store or in one size. Workers and even customers move items all the time from where they are technically supposed to be so if your a size small don’t let that stop you from looking in the larger sizes where there might just be a piece that’s exactly what you were looking for.
Last but not Least, DON’T GO BROKE SAVING MONEY
Thrift stores are a magical place full of great finds for great prices. However, dont let the fact that the t shirt you might wear once or twice is only a few bucks be a reason to get it. Like I said before, you have to be open minded when going thrift shopping, but if there is a piece that’s completely not your style and is only trendy than it is better to chose a shirt that you love (even if it’s “weird”) over the “trendy” shirt you don’t especially like. When you find a article of clothing, picture yourself wearing it more than once, or for a longer time than a few weeks. If you can do that, then you know it won’t be a waste of money sitting in your closet forever. Remember, fads and trends die, but your personal style is always there.
So there ya have it! Hope you learned something new to help you find your own pair of grandma pants or blast from the past 80’s tee! Good luck and Happy Thrifting!
