In the 1980’s, people really took style to a personal level. While there was a common theme of bright colors, crazy patterns, and outrageous hair to match outrageous style, people really took a personality to their clothing. Then, when you look at the 1990’s, fashion went more peaceful, modern, and contemporary. Decade by decade, fashion took a sharp turn.
There was really nothing subtle about the 1980’s. Iconic, is a good word to describe the fashion in this decade, especially with its shoulder pads, fanny packs, parachute pants, and all. Truly, there were formalities in the clothing, because women still had work to do, and businesses to work for, but they never tried to less to stay extravagant. Another thing to pay attention to is the fact that women really started ruling things and becoming more and more faces of america's, so this was a time for women to thrive and be independent, and that also had a huge impact on fashion.
Fashion was all over the place in the 80’s, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Punk trends were another huge thing other other than business and “casual” wear, along with sporty fashion also! In the punk fashion, teens sported all kinds of leathery material on top of more leathery material, then topped off with some heavy makeup and bright, neon pieces to go with the crazy hair.
No matter what fashion trend was followed in the 80’s, leggings were a huge stamp throughout all styles. People would wear them with crop tops, or have a leathery jacket over some plaid printed ones. Sometimes even paired with a bright shirt and some neon leg warmers. People most certainly did not hold back during this era when experimenting with different styles all at once, what would be considered clashing now, was considered “like, totally in”, back then.
A thing people really based their outfit culture off of was music videos. They were getting extremely popularized back then, especially Madonna. Singers and artists created a lot of inspiration for everyone back in that time. Young people idolized their favorite artists and took their style, and specialized it to fit and to their liking and personality. Hardly anyone held back with what they really wanted to wear in the 80’s.

The 1990’s was when fashion started cooling off a bit and started modernizing more, especially with denim, but it was still all about individuality and personal preference. In the 90’s, the punk style was looked back on and developed gradually into grunge, which still today is favored by many. Prep style was also another look, really good examples of preppy styles in the 90’s are in the movie Clueless! Clothing was also based off outfits you would see in such things such as a hip-hop music video. Things in this time really set and grouped into different sections and people dipped into whatever they had a liking to.

Loose-fitting clothing also because a large frontier on all categories of fashion during this time. Although there was still business style, people tended to slip into less form fitting outfits, and more of things that hung loosely off the body. Another huge step was heels, or a type of platform of some sort. Whether people tended to lean to grunge or preppy, types of heels really set in.
During the 1990’s and 1980’s era of fashion, people really based their styles off of other people and other eras, and personalized it to their liking, these two decades were really a time for people to find themselves in fashion and create new out of old.
